When: August 2024 & August 2025
Where: Northern Quarter, Greater Manchester
transforming a public craft space into a live making moment — inviting visitors to step into the tufting process and collectively create a large-scale textile piece.
In August 2024 and again in August 2025, we delivered a live tufting activation at Manchester Craft and Design Centre.
Working on a 60x80cm freehand canvas, we set up a visible tufting station within the Centre and invited the public to take part. Visitors signed up via a free Eventbrite listing, allowing for structured engagement while keeping the event fully accessible.
Participants were guided through the tufting process — learning how to handle the gun, understanding the texture of the yarn, and physically contributing to the developing textile piece. The freehand format encouraged a more playful, intuitive approach to mark-making, allowing the final design to evolve through collective input.
The completed piece remained with Manchester Craft and Design Centre, acting as both a physical outcome of the activation and a visual reminder of shared creative participation within the space.
The focus of the sessions was:
Public access to contemporary craft
Demystifying tufting through live demonstration
Hands-on engagement in a gallery context
Collaborative making in an open environment
